Press Release: The Camera Room

The House  3 May - 20th January 2011

The House is pleased to present "The Camera Room", an exhibition of S J Emberton's photographs, made in London, England (2007-2009). This marks Emberton's first solo exhibition.

Using an 8 x 10 inch view camera, Emberton photographed models in a specially developed black room that is reminiscent of the pictorialist tradition. The room itself is like a camera that focuses light on the subject.

The images, shot in London, depict young women as fashion models
and emphasize the subjectivity of perception and observation through subtle
shifts in his camera's focus and perspective.

These portraits remain elusive and at the margins
of a specific place and time, with no immediate reference to their
surroundings. As a result, the fashion element becomes a backdrop into which
something deeper becomes obvious.

Emberton has learned that all observation, including the seemingly most objective,
is always subjective, selective, skewed, focused, blurred, abstracted or even accidental.

S J Emberton has lived and worked in London for over 20 years; his work has been featured
in numerous advertising campaigns and editorials.
